Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries are rapidly gaining market share in the BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) market in the US. The rapidly growing BESS and data center energy storage market in the US provides an immediate opportunity since BESS market does not have the long qualification cycles of the auto OEMs. The BESS market is estimated to be at 58 GWh at ~$25B in 2025 growing exponentially over the next 5-6 years.
The US does not have any domestic production of LFP cathode active material (CAM) or LFP cells and is dependent on China for both the LFP CAM and cells. However, there is a strong push for a non-China content in the US including changes in investment tax credit to exclude FEOC i.e. Foreign Entity of Concern.
Sparkz is currently the only producer of LFP CAM and cells and has commenced Phase 1 of production and shipping of LFP Cathode Active Material (CAM) and cells from its Sacramento plant. Sparkz is partnering with a Korean cell equipment manufacturer for a turnkey solution including equipment, commissioning and process know-how for a 250MWh cell production line (Phase 2) and is also scaling up CAM production to 4000 Ton/year capacity. Phase 2 will come online in Q2'26.
